Latest Weather and Haze Situation

Dry weather prevailed over many parts of the southern ASEAN region today, except over the northern parts of Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia, as well as some parts of Borneo where showers were observed. Scattered hotspots were detected in parts of Kalimantan while few hotspots were detected elsewhere in the southern ASEAN region. Moderate to dense smoke plumes were observed in the southern parts of Sumatra, the southern and eastern Kalimantan, as well as the northern and central parts of Sulawesi. Moderate to dense smoke haze was also observed in the southern parts of Papua. The full extent of the hotspot and smoke haze situation in the region could not be fully determined due to cloud cover. Showers were observed over most parts of the northern ASEAN region. Few to isolated hotspots were detected mainly in Myanmar, Thailand and northern Viet Nam, with a slight localised smoke plume observed to emanate from a hotspot in northern Viet Nam.

Weather and Haze Outlook

In the coming days, dry conditions are expected over parts of the southern ASEAN region, except Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java and parts of Borneo where showers are forecast. The hotspot and smoke haze situation may improve in areas experiencing showers but also continue to stay elevated in areas experiencing prolonged periods of dry weather, with a risk of transboundary haze occurrence. The prevailing winds over the southern ASEAN region are forecast to blow from the east or southeast. On the other hand, wet weather is expected to persist over the northern ASEAN region, except for the northern parts of the Mekong sub-region where it is forecast to be relatively drier. Isolated hotspots and smoke plumes may develop in areas facing prolonged dry conditions. The prevailing winds over the northern ASEAN region are forecast to be northeast or southeast.
